Finding a balance

There is something about the changing of the seasons that makes me think more. Perhaps this isn’t entirely strange. Fall makes me finally take some time to regroup. Spurred on by shorter days, crisp mornings and falling leaves, I once again take more notice of the things around me. In the fall, I reflect on the summer that was and all the things I have accomplished. I look forward to winter sports like snow shoeing, ice fishing, and snow mobiling. In the spring, I look forward to a new planting season and the warmer weather for enjoying my kayak and long hikes in the woods. Pretty typical, I’m guessing.

These changing seasons also afford me time to find balance once again. As we all know, it is so easy to get caught up in our busy lives. Buzzing off to work, the store, plopping in front of the TV to catch a favorite show. Actually, these are things I find my self doing all too often despite my best efforts not to.

How do I find my balance once again? Over several days or weeks, I think about the things I would like to do less of (watching TV, even though this is minimal). I also think of the things I would like to do more of (reading, being outdoors). Once I settle on a thing or two, I schedule it like I would any appointment. This is how I am able to consistantly exercise, so I have applied this same thought process to other things I would like to do or accomplish. Yep, it gets a place on my calendar like a doctor appointment.

Whether or not I actually accomplish these things I set out to do is not the point of this exercise. It affords me a period of reflection on what my priorities and goals should be for the coming season. It helps me to separate my work day from my life outside of work. It puts the focus back on myself and helps me to accomplish tasks which are important to me.

How do you regain a sense of balance in your life?
