Earth Friendly Choices (April 2008)

Join the “Buy Nothing Challenge”
See our article about this April Challenge in this month’s issue of the footprint. It is really quite simple. Challenge yourself to reject consumerism by purchasing nothing new for the month of April. Not only will this help you get a grip on your shopping habits and hopefully, provoke some thought about what is really important to us all, but it should save you lots of money!
Want to do more? Join The Compact or the Minnesota Compact
Both adventures are devoted to a 12 month “flight from the consumer grid”. No new purchases for an entire year! The folks at the Minnesota Compact describe their goals as follows:
-
To go beyond recycling in trying to counteract the negative global environmental and socioeconomic impacts of disposable consumer culture and to support local businesses and farms.
-
To reduce clutter and waste in our homes (who doesn’t need to do that!).
- To simplify our lives.
Become Involved! Join a local group!
Not sure what to do with that nervous energy because you told yourself you wouldn’t go shopping? There are many local groups that would love to see you! Visit the footprint Forum for more information or contact us with your interests. We’ll help you find the right group.
Consider contributing to the footprint with a short article, book review, news item, or opinion piece. We are always looking for people who care about what is happing locally! Let us know how you would like to help.
