The Buy Nothing Challenge

Buy Nothing Challenge - April 2008

One of our favorite blogs, Crunchy Chicken, is starting a new challenge for the month of April. The footprint has decided to help inspire our readers and to spread the word since this fits in so perfectly with this month’s topic.

The rules are simple. Food, medications and other essential items are allowed. Prohibited purchases include everything else! That’s right. Challenge yourself to fight the evils of consumerism run amuck by vowing to not purchase any new clothing, cosmetics, shoes, purses, yard implements, tools, or anything else considered to be “non-essential”.

This challenge may really be a struggle for some. With tax day fast approaching and our “economic relief” checks soon in our hot little hands, the urge to follow our presidents advice to “go shopping” may be too much for some to resist. The footprint recommends restraint!

Think about purchases. A whole month of buying nothing will give you time to think about what you want versus what you need. After a month, you most likely will find that item wasn’t really needed and you can get by just fine without it. Thoughts like this are some of the first steps to a simpler way of life.
