Earth Friendly Choices ~ Autumn 2008

As the leaves are falling and cooler weather is settling in, we are wrapping up our preserving and canning for the season. Our Earth Friendly Choices for the fall season will include reflections on becoming and living a more sustainable life.
Garden Journal
Even though this growing season has just wrapped up, now is the time to take some notes about the success and failures of this past season.
If you do not keep a garden journal, now would be a perfect time to start. Taking notes on everything from the weather, rainfall, how much you watered, and shade vs. sunny locations will be very useful for next year.
In your notes, include a list of the veggies, fruits and herbs you grew this year. Include your produce yield and what you grew successfully. What didn’t grow for you this year and why? Too wet, too cool, wrong location in the garden? All of these things will help you plan for next year.
Save Energy & Money This Holiday Season
It’s not too late to switch thos light bulbs! Surprisingly, there are a lot of homes still using conventional light bulbs. As these burn out, replace them with energy saving CFLs. RPU is still offering their 50% rebate thru 2008. Click on this link to learn more.
And just in time for holiday decorating…did you know that LED lights use 95% less energy and you can apply for a rebate thru RPU? Yes, it’s true. You can apply for an LED rebate until 31 March 2009. Click on this link to learn more.
Click here for more information on CFLs. And here for a LED fact sheet. (Both FAQ sheets are available on the RPU website.)
Stay tuned……more Earth Friendly Choices will be added in the coming days!
