The Five Re’s (July 2007)

Reduce

Reduce energy usage in your home by unplugging electronics that are not in use (microwave, TV, CD player, cell phone charger).

Reduce the amount of water you use by taking a shower/bath. Install a low-flow shower head or try taking a “military” shower (turn water down or off while sudsing up).

Recycle

Recycle the rinse water from your laundry. Run the rinse water into your utility sink and use it for rinsing the next load.

Reuse

Reuse an old quilt. Turn a quilt or heavier fabric into curtains to keep out winter drafts.

Collect the water from “heating up” your shower in the morning. Use it to flush the toilet or water indoor/outdoor plants.

Repurpose

Turn your microwave into a solar oven.

Set-up rain barrels to collect run off from your roof. Give this “waste” water a new purpose by watering your garden and flowers with it.

Rethink

Rethink common everyday tasks:

  1. How can I do laundry differently? Save money for heating water by washing clothes in cold water. Hang clothes outside to dry or hang clotheslines in basement or another infrequently used room in your house (spare bedroom, second floor). Consider purchasing a clothes drying rack.
  2. Reduce oven usage. Think about the necessity of turning on the oven. Coordinate with a neighbor and plan “baking days” where you would share the oven (and the energy) for that day.
  3. Turn off the TV! Not only will you save energy and money, it’s good for your health too. Instead of sitting on the couch, go for a walk or bike ride, take the kids to the neighborhood playground, or work in the garden.
  4. Thermostats. By turning the thermostat up or down, even a few degrees, you will notice a big savings in energy and $$.
