The Footprint
where will your feet take you?

-Six Easy Steps (June 2007)

  1. Bike
Riding a bicycle uses absolutely no nonrenewable energy (just your own!) and emits no pollution, making it one of the best ways to get around without contributing to climate change. Riding a bike also means there’s one less car on the road to be involved in traffic jams, accidents and road-related injuries to wildlife.
  2. Walk
Did you know that every time you walk instead of drive for a journey under 3 miles you save about 2kg of CO2? If you walk at 3 mph for 30 minutes, you burn 119 calories
  3. Ride-share
If possible, take advantage of carpools and ride-share programs. You can cut your weekly fuel costs in half and save wear on your car if you take turns driving with other commuters. You can register at http://www.erideshare.com/ to find others who are interested in carpooling or commuting with another.
  4. Mass transit
Aside from saving gas, by taking mass transit, you’re helping to reduce the amount of emissions put into the air each day.
  5. Combine trips and errands
When running errands, combine trips. Several short trips taken while your car’s engine is cold can use twice as much fuel and produce twice the amount of greenhouse gas emissions as a longer multipurpose trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm.
  6. Teleport! (or maybe decide not to make the trip).
Think about whether you need to drive someplace or if you simply want to get out of the house. If it is the latter, then perhaps going for a walk or choosing another activity is better than going for a drive.
